Shabbir enjoys limelight at Karachi races

KARACHI: Jockey-cum-trainer Ghulam Shabbir II stole the limelight by guiding a brace of winners apart from saddling three champions as one race was cancelled after being run for want of competition in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

At the outset, public fancy unknown pedigree bay horse Vieto Power obliged the punters galloping to seven-and-a-half lengths victory over filly Nany to make it two victories on the trot. Filly Zeenat from Pir Pagara’s stable was placed third beaten by distance while bay horse Lucky Lyna completed the board further pushed by neck.

The field was reduced to six following the withdrawal of Pampas Grass before the race.




The trend of favourite horses obliging all and sundry continued when chestnut horse Choco Bar won as he pleased but to no avail as the race was cancelled by stewards for want of competition.

Three-year-old chestnut filly Miss Oscar overtook front runner colt King’s Man in the home stretch to post a length and three-quarter win. The winning horse was ridden home by M. Nasir and trained by Ghulam Shabbir II. Meri Sahiba and Shahzad Love seized the next two places on board respectively.

Owner Syed Ismail Shah and Shabbir, who had a dual role of rider and trainer, celebrated the triumph of filly Gamez Over and colt The King’s Best in the last two races.

The 20 to 100 favourite Games Over avenged her last defeat by getting the better of Zahrat Dubai by two lengths and a half in the fourth race. The latter had beaten Star Gold by half-a-length to win the race on April 5 while the former was among those who also ran.

The 15 to 100 favourite colt The King’s Best stretched his winning sequence imposing to an eight lengths victory over colt Kick to pick up spoils in the fifth and concluding race. Snow Fairy had to be content with third place half-a-length behind while Lava Man completed the frame beaten by seven lengths among seven starters following withdrawal of All The Way.
