Slew of performances on World Dance Day

LAHORE: Pakistan National Council of Arts in collaboration with Lahore Arts Council is gearing up to celebrate International Dance Day at Alhamra Art Centre on April 29.

Arrangements are being made to celebrate the day from stitching up new costumes for the dancers to designing a breathtaking set studded with pleasing-to-eye decorative motifs. There will be a numerous set of performances in the show that will include dance presentations by students of educational institutions, seasoned dancers and artistes from Performing Art Group of PNCA itself.

PNCA’s Shakir Ali Museum Director Amna Pataudi told Dawn that students from National College of Arts, Lahore Grammar School, veteran dancer Bina Jawad’s students and professional dancers from PNCA will colour the evening on April 29 with classical, contemporary and folk dances.

Ms Pataudi said the show would be the fourth edition of dance on International Dance Day for which PNCA art designer Shahab Chaudhry would design a magnificent set duly ornamented with required decorative stuff and images.

The show has been dedicated by PNCA to ace dancer Nighat Chauhdry’s contribution to the art. Ms Chauhdry will also grace the occasion with an exclusive performance on the occasion. Her students will, however, make a separate dance performance at the same venue.

Besides other performances, a major portion of the show will be consumed by the PNCA Lahore Chapter Performing Arts Troupe consisting of four female and eight male dancers. They will make some nine performances.

The PNCA management at Shakir Ali Museum told this reporter that this year due to security hazards entrance to the show will be strictly on invitation cards. Children below eight years of age will not be allowed. Cell phones will not be allowed in the hall as well and the doors will close at 6pm sharp.

The World Dance Day was first celebrated in 1982 by the International Dance Council, a Unesco-partner NGO, and is observed every year on April 29. It’s also the day when the French dancer and ballet master Jean-Georges Noverre was born.
