SHIKARPUR: Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani has predicted ‘great victory’ for the Pakistan Peoples Party in upcoming local government election and said the party’s leadership has broken with the past practice of awarding party tickets to leaders only and decided to give an opportunity to general workers in LG polls.
The PPP workers deserved to be holding key posts in local bodies as they, like their leaders, had suffered a great deal and rendered great many sacrifices for the sake of the party, he said.
Mr Durrani who is also PPP president of Larkana division, said while speaking at a public meeting in Lakhi Ghulam Shah town near here on Tuesday evening that all conspiracies being hatched by anti-PPP forces to derail democratic system would be foiled with the help of collective power of party workers and people.
He said that he was confident the PPP would achieve a great victory in upcoming LG polls with the support of party workers and masses in Sindh in particular and in other provinces in general.
The party would improve people’s socio-economic conditions, redress their grievances and resolve nagging problems at their doorsteps in pursuance of the mission left unfinished by party founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and pushed forward by his brave daughter Benazir Bhutto.
Mr Durrani lashed out at the attitude of opposition parties’ leaders, especially Mahars of Wazirabad in Shikarpur district and alleged that Mahars were a product of the dictators, Gen Ziaul Haq and Gen Pervez Musharraf.
They enjoyed power under non-democratic governments, encouraged corruption culture and robbed national exchequer of public wealth, he said.
He said that present PML-F MNA Ghous Bux Khan Mahar had held a key post in the Sindh Assembly that of speaker during the PPP government and had sympathies of PPP leadership on his side but he failed to prove himself worthy of the job in accordance with the party policy and in the interests of assembly and wellbeing of masses and the province.
The present Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, Shaharyar Khan Mahar, who was associated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional appeared to be like his father who got disillusioned with the central leadership of PPP after the party failed to help him meet his political and personal ends.
He said that instead of serving people of his constituency, he had adopted an anti-people policy, started occupying land illegally and encouraging criminal elements in order to establish his domination over the poor people.
He advised the Mahar leaders to change their attitude towards people and the PPP leadership in the larger interest of the province.
PPP divisional general secretary MNA Gul Mohammad Jakhrani, Agha Masseehuddin Durani, Sardar Hamat Ali Khan Kamario, former advisor to chief minister Zulifkar Ali Kamario, Kamran Khan Mahar, PPP district ladies wing leader Madad Rehana Bhutto and other leaders also spoke at the public meeting and expressed anger at anti-PPP leaders.
They asked party workers to be prepared for a big fight in the upcoming LG election and elect PPP candidates to local bodies institutions to serve people as per mission of Benazir Bhutto.
