Chernobyl disaster
April 26, 1986
THE Chernobyl disaster is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history. On the morning of this day, reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant exploded. More explosions ensued, and the fires that resulted sent radioactive fallout into the atmosphere. Thirty people were killed in the accident, 135,000 were evacuated and a hundred times more radiation was released than by the atom bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
