Shahzaib strikes form as Wolves exit

KARACHI: Long discarded Pakistan opener Shahzaib Hasan rediscovered his old touch with a crucial half-century as Karachi Dolphins signalled Faisalabad Wolves’ exit from the Cool & Cool presents Haier Super 8 T20 Cup with a six-wicket triumph in Faisalabad late on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old tall right-hander, who played in 10 Twenty20 International and three One-day Internationals in a brief career that prematurely ended in November 2010, lashed five sixes and a brace of fours in scoring 59 off 34 deliveries to play a pivotal role in chasing a modest target of 145 at the Iqbal Stadium.

The absence of regular skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, who is preparing to tie nuptial knots on Tuesday, didn’t make any difference after the Wolves struggled to 144-9 in the last Group ‘B’ game that decided the remaining semi-final spot.

Shahzaib dominated early part of the innings during the run chase and when he was caught in the deep, the Dolphins were 90-3 in the 12th over. Thereafter, Rameez Raja (25 off 21 balls, four boundaries) and the talented left-hander Mohammad Waqas (22 not out from 16 balls, two fours and one six) completed the last rites in a stand of 49.

Earlier, Jahandad Khan’s maiden T20 half-century — 54 off 44 balls with the aid of five boundaries and two sixes — was the solitary bright spot as the Wolves were strangulated by tight bowling which was brilliantly utilised by stand-in Dolphins skipper Mohammad Sami.

Sami himself was inspirational in taking three wickets for 19 runs to lead by example.

Misbah-ul-Haq, the evergreen Wolves captain, added 56 for the third wicket with Jahandad before being dismissed for 30 (36 balls, two sixes and one four) in probably his last T20 appearance.
