Arrest warrant out for IO in Arshad Pappu murder case

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court on Wednesday issued a warrant for the arrest of an investigating officer for his prolonged absence in the Arshad Pappu murder case.

Shahjehan Baloch, a Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker from Lyari, ex-SHO Javed Baloch, the then inspector Yousuf Baloch, Zubair Baloch, Zakir Dada and Abdul Rehman have been charged with their alleged involvement in the murder of Arshad Pappu, the alleged leader of an infamous Lyari gang, his brother Yasir Arafat and their confidant Juma Shera, in March 2013.

When the case came up for hearing before Judge Akhlaq Hussain Larak of the ATC-VII on Wednesday for evidence of prosecution witnesses and arguments on a bail application, the first IO inspector Abid Ansari was found absent. He also did not turn up at some previous herrings despite being repeatedly summoned.

The court issued a non-bailable warrant against the IO through the DIG concerned till June 23.

Meanwhile, the court reserved its order till the next hearing on the bail application of accused Yousuf Baloch after hearing arguments from both sides.

The banned Lyari People’s Amn Committee chief Uzair Jan Baloch, Noor Mohammad alias Baba Ladla, his brother Zahid Ladla, Asif Kana, Faisal Pathan, Yasir Pathan and a former SHO Chand Khan Niazi have already been declared proclaimed offenders in the case and the court had ruled that the proceedings against the proclaimed offenders would be conducted in absentia as provided in Section 19(10) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
