PML–N body to select candidates for LG polls

ISLAMABAD: With the announcement of schedule for local government elections in Islamabad, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in his capacity as the head of PML-N, set up a committee on Wednesday to select candidates.

The PML-N MNA from Islamabad Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry will head the committee as its convener. Other members include MNA Malik Abrar, president PML-N Islamabad city, Raja Azmat Javed, President PML-N Islamabad rural Raja Waqar Mumtaz, General Secretary PML-N, ICT rural, Chaudhry Tauseef, General Secretary, PML-N, ICT city Sajid Abbasi, ex-MNA from Islamabad city, Anjum Aqeel Khan, advocate Ashraf Gujjar and Advocate Sardar Mehtab.

Other main contenders for LG elections in ICT, PTI and PPP have already constituted special boards to select candidates.

Although political parties are gearing up for first ever local bodies elections both in urban and rural areas of Islamabad, the act under which these polls will be conducted was still pending in the Senate.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday announced schedule for LG elections in Islamabad according to which nomination papers will be accepted from Thursday to Friday. Elections will be held on July 25.
