Pakistan to feature in Victorian Open, Australian OpenArchive
ISLAMABAD: A three-member Pakistan squad will proceed to Australia on July 22 to feature in Victorian Open and Australian Open, Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) secretary Group Captain Aamir Nawaz said on Tuesday.
“We will send three players — Nasir Iqbal, Farhan Zaman and Tayyab Aslam — to represent the country in Victorian Open and Australian Open events,” Aamir said.
The Victoria Open will be held from July 27 to Aug 2 and will feature graded events for players of all abilities to compete alongside the professionals.
The Australian Open will make its first appearance on the PSA World Tour since 2012 when it gets underway on Aug 5 with some high-profile players vying for the title.
Aamit said that both senior and junior players had undergone vigorous training during the month-long training camp at the Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad in the holy month of Ramazan.
“The players have been getting training daily in the camp after ‘Taraweeh’ prayers till ‘Sehri. They are in good shape and we hope they will do well in the events,” he added.
Meanwhile, Squash and Racquetball Victoria executive director Fiona Young said the quality of entries for this year’s Australian Open was outstanding.
“To have 18 players ranked in the world top 50s is fantastic and we are keen to show the sporting public how good squash can live,” Young was quoted by Australian daily Herald Sun.
“The all-glass court is a great showcase for the sport and we are hoping for sellout crowds for the finals,” Young added.
