JI stages protest at KE head officeArchive
KARACHI: The Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi chapter on Wednesday launched a protest drive against the K-Electric through holding an hours-long peaceful demonstration and a sit-in outside the KE head office in Karachi.
The demonstration was held at the time when there was an outcry in public against massive outages and loadshedding carried out by the KE amid widespread condemnation of the utility held responsible for worsening the situation during the summer season, protest organisers said.
Recently the metropolis witnessed widespread and long power breakdowns and outages. Over 1,200 people had died in recent heatwave during which electricity outages and loadshedding aggravated the situation making people suffer hours-long outages in sizzling summer temperatures.
A large number of people from all walks of life, including the representatives of different trades and civil society, as well as local residents of adjoining areas participated in the protest.
Speaking to the participants in the sit-in, JI leaders held the KE high-ups and ‘corrupt politicians’ responsible for miseries of more than 20 million residents of Karachi, who had been facing continuous mental and physical trauma due to, what they described as, “greed of the KE owners and some politicians”.
They also accused the ‘armed wings’ of some political parties of hand in glove with the KE and added that they indeed fuelled the already deteriorating situation.
The JI leaders raised questions on monitory affairs of the utility and held the administration and politicians ‘supporting’ them responsible for ‘illegal’ moves of the KE.
