FMDC submits undertaking to PMDC

ISLAMABAD: Students of the Federal Medical and Dental College (FMDC), who were earlier denied admission, may be admitted this week following an undertaking submitted by the college, promising to acquire missing facilities within a month.

After passing the admission test on April 12, successful candidates awaited a call for admission by the college.

However, 100 students were denied admission after the Pakistan Medical and Dental College (PMDC) barred the college from admitting students as the college was deficient in many core facilities. On July 8, President Mamnoon Hussain called a meeting of all stakeholders and it was decided that PMDC would allow students to be admitted, if FMDC removes deficiencies within one month.

Vice Chancellor Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University (Pims) Dr Javed Akram, while talking to Dawn, said that on Tuesday he sent an undertaking to PMDC that deficiencies will be removed.

“PMDC officials refused to accept it and said that the language of the undertaking should be amended. After the amendment, the undertaking was submitted once again,” he said.

“Now we are waiting for a notification from PMDC before starting the admission process. Hopefully, this would be issued soon. Process for appointment of four faculty members has been started and they would be hired as soon as approval from the prime minister’s office is received,” he said.

PMDC Registrar Dr Shaista Faisal told Dawn that the undertaking has been received.

“The undertaking has been forwarded to PMDC President and after receiving his approval, a conditional letter for admission of students will be issued,” she said.

President of Parents Action Forum Sarwar Aizaz told Dawn said students have been waiting to be admitted for the last three months and parents have been running from pillar to post.

“We hope that the issue will be resolved soon and quality education will be provided in the college,” he said.
