Shabbir excels at Independence Day Open Golf

KARACHI: Rejuvenated Mohammad Shabbir, who was tied in the fourth place with four competitors at two under 70, shot a blistering 67 to seize two shot lead in the UBL seventh Independence Day Cup Open Golf Championship at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club on Saturday.

Defending champion Shabbir has a two round aggregate of 137, seven under, two shots ahead of challenger Hamza Amin who shot one under 71 in the second round for a total of 139.

Fresh from his triumph in the Sindh Open, Islamabad’s Shabbir has inched closer to justify his credentials by making it two on the trot.




Overnight leader Talib Hussain slipped at eighth position after a poor second round card of 81, nine over par. Shahid Javed Khan is just a stroke away from Hamza at 140, four under par. after a par round.

Matloob Ahmed is at the fourth place after successive rounds of 71 at 142, two under, followed by Mohammad Munir and Waheed Baloch at 143, one under.

Meanwhile, M. Naeem posted a card of one over 73 in the second round to attain one shot lead, pushing overnight leader Zohaib Asif to the second place.

Naeem, who was joint second after a par round on Friday, has two day aggregate of 145, one over.

Zohaib, who started well, posting 69 on the first day, was off the mark on the penultimate day with 77, five over par.

The championship concludes on Sunday.
