SBP urged to restore grants to associationsArchive
LAHORE: The Punjab Olympic Association (PbOA) on Wednesday appealed to the provincial government to restore the annual grant of various provincial sports associations, which was suspended several years ago.
The appeal was made by PbOA secretary Idrees Haider Khawaja during the meeting here in which a cheque of Rs20,000 was given to each of 30 PbOA-affiliated associations for organising the Independence Day sports events.
According to Idrees, Sports Board Punjab (SBP) had been giving financial grant to the associations but it was suspended some seven years ago.
“It is not a big amount as it varies from Rs70,000 to Rs100,000 annually; if the SBP restores this grant it will not create big burden for them,” he said.
Later, PbOA president Iftikhar Malik asked the associations to chalk out a comprehensive programme to promote sports across the province, while insisting that private sector should come forward to help sports organisers.
Pakistan Olympic Association secretary Khalid Mahmood, who attended the meeting, emphasised that private sector could play a vital role for promoting sports.
