LAHORE: City witnessed on Sunday a number of flag-hoisting ceremonies, events and seminars to mark the Defence Day with great national zeal and zest by paying homage to martyrs during the 1965 war between Pakistan and India.
MIANI SAHIB GRAVEYARD: A major ceremony was held at Miani Sahib, where Pakistan army troops presented guard of honour at the mausoleum of Maj Shabbir Sharif Shaheed.
At the ceremony which was mainly attended by the family members of Major Shabbir Sharif, the troops laid a floral wreath and bouquets at the grave on behalf of Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif.
CDGL: The City District Government of Lahore organised its main ceremony at Town Hall, where Brig Khalid Rasheed (Pak Army’s station commander), SM Shahzad (Naval commander) and District Coordination Officer Muhammad Usman jointly hoisted the national flag.
After national anthem, a troop of the CDGL’s civil defence department razakars (volunteers) presented a guard of honour to senior military and administrative officials.
Addressing the ceremony, Khalid Rasheed said the success of the armed forces in the 1965 war was based on the extraordinary support and the unity of the nation.
“On the occasion we pay tributes to the bold officers of our armed forces who fought till the last moment with the enemy and safeguarded Pakistan by offering their lives,” he said. Naval Commander SM Shahzad said the bravery of the armed forces forced the enemy to run back.
The DCO said the Defence Day not only recalled memories of the war but also imparted a lesson of unity to the nation. On the occasion, the school children sang national songs.
TRADE UNIONISTS: A number of workers and trade unionists visited Batapur (BRB Canal) and paid tributes to martyrs of the 1965 war, who sacrificed their lives for the defence of the motherland.
They visited memorials of Maj Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and others martyrs.
Led by All Pakistan Workers Confederation General Secretary Khurshid Ahmed, the participants including Osama Tariq, Sajid Kazmi, Syed Zulqarnain Shah, Malik Zubair and Maqsood Naqvi prayed for the martyrs.
