Committee to propose policy for revival of cultureArchive
LAHORE: The Punjab government has finally realised that there should be a cohesive policy to smoothly run the affairs of arts and culture that is why Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has constituted a committee to further form sub-committees for revival of culture, sources told Dawn.
The sources said the committee constituted under the convenership of spokesperson for the Punjab government MPA Zaeem Qadri will draft a culture policy incorporating the government’s vision, activities and timelines. It would also conduct resource planning, processes and procedures.
The committee will provide a five-year framework with the first-year plan. It is expected that a post of additional secretary (culture) outside the purview of information department will be introduced under this policy. The committee will also shortlist creative service providers and provide guidelines for hiring.
The main committee has been further divided into sub-committees handling various aspects such as festivals on arts and culture, heritage festivals and visual and performing arts. These sub-committees will include prominent personalities from different sections of life.
The committee for arts and culture festivals headed by Lahore Arts Council Executive Director retired Captain Atta Muhammad Khan includes Walled City of Lahore Authority Director General Kamran Lashari, architect Nayyar Ali Dada, Nusrat Jamil, Fauzia Azeem, Yousaf Salahuddin, Sajjad Kausar, Majeed Sheikh, Haroon Azeem and National College of Arts Principal Murtaza Jafri as members.
The committee for festivals on heritage includes members mentioned above as well as Naeem Tahir, Sajida Vandal and Punjab Council of Arts Executive Director Chaudhry Asif. Similarly, other sub-committees were also formed to look after other aspects.
A meeting headed by Culture Secretary Momin Agha was held on Monday at the Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, which was attended by Capt Khan, Shoaib Bin Aziz, Tahir and the additional secretary (finance).
In the meeting, Capt Khan proposed creation of post of an additional secretary (culture) to look after culture sector that should have nothing to do with the information department. He also proposed re-adoption of the Drama Act 1876 with certain amendments.
