Ghazanfar, Zohaib lead the pack in Punjab Amateur GolfArchive
LAHORE: The three-day Coca Cola Punjab Amateur Golf 2015 commenced here at the Royal Palm Golf Course on Friday.
Many of the leading amateur golf players teed off on the day but those who impressed include Ghazanfar Mehmood (Rawalpindi), Zohaib Asif (DHA), Wazir Ali (Gymkhana) and Muhammed Naeem (Abbotabad). Out of these four Ghazanfar and Zohaib were bracketed at a gross score of par 72 while Wazir and Naeem were placed one shot behind at a score of gross 73.
During the first round the weather was not too friendly but Ghazanfar managed to play to a plan and his shot execution off the tees and fairways was near perfect. In the course of the 18 holes, Ghazanfar never strayed from the fairways, yet he did encounter stroke losses on holes 1 and 6 and later on the 17th. However, the adverse effect of these stroke losses was neutralised through birdies on holes 12,13 and 16.
Ghazanfar completed the first round with a par score of 72, finishing the day on top of the leaderboard. However, he is not the sole leader as his fellow competitor Zohaib was equally in control and demonstrated high level skill to score birdies on holes 12 and 13 while losing on holes 9 and 18. He also finished the day at par score of 72.
Both Wazir and Naeem are breathing down the leaders’ neck with par score of 73 each. While Wazir is considered an established golfer, Naeem from Abbotabad is a talented young player who is gradually making his mark on the circuit. Some others who did not display all round brilliance but were impressive in patches were M Rehman of Royal Palm, Ashiq Hussain of Multan and Waseem Rana (DHA), Mohammed Shahzad (Garrison) and Saqib Tufail (Garrison).
