Tehsil nazim, naib nazim polls delayedArchive
UPPER DIR: The Election Commission of Pakistan has postponed elections for nazim and naib nazim of Wari tehsil as the Jamaat-i-Islami got a stay order against them from a local court.
The elections were slated to take place on September 20.
The elections had ended in a tie twice – first on August 30 and later on September 13.
The local senior civil judge granted stay order against the elections on the JI petition.
The Muttahida Qaumi Mahaz (MQM) leaders and elected representatives, including Najmuddin Khan, Gul Bahadar, Saeed Shah and others, staged a protest outside the offices of District Election Commissioner against the stay order decision.
The MQM leaders and elected members including newly-elected MPA from PK-93 Sahibzada Sanaullah, tehsil nazim nominee Gul Bahadar, tehsil naib nazim candidate Saeed Shah also addressed a news conference.
Sanaullah said JI was running away for the elections and that provincial minister for local government Inayatullah Khan backed the JI on the matter.
He claimed the judge had violated the law by granting stay order as he was not authorised by the law to do so.
The MPA demanded that the Supreme Court and Peshawar High Court take notice of the matter for corrective measures.
The DEC told Dawn that the ECP had retained the stay order and that elections for nazim and naib nazim had been postponed.
