Five ‘drown’ as vehicle ends up in canalArchive
RAHIM YAR KHAN: Five people are feared drowned after a tractor-trolley fell into a canal due to collision with a trailer near Sahja, about 33 kilometres from here, on Sunday.
Teams of Rescue 1122 kept making frantic efforts to fish out any survivor or dead body till last reports came in but any glimmer of hope faded as dusk approached.
Seven residents of Chak 36-P aboard a tractor-trolley laden with raw cotton were going to Rahim Yar Khan to sell it. When they reached a bridge over Abbasia Canal, a trailer coming from the opposite direction collided with the tractor-trolley which rolled into the canal after smashing the rickety wall.
Two injured persons Ashiq Hussain and Zakir Hussain came out of the canal but Imdad Ali, Asif, Dilawar, Khadim and Yaar Sajid were feared drowned in the raging waters.
The Rescue 1122 teams from Khanpur and Rahim Yar Khan reached the scene and started operation during which they found the mangled tractor-trolley. The search for the travellers was in progress by late evening.
Ashiq, though gasping and in pain, heaved a sigh of relief for having saved his amount of Rs600,000 he had kept in a shopping bag.
People of the area protested against what they said delay in arrival of rescue cranes and blocked Rahim Yar Khan-Khanpur Road for some hours.
The accident occurred hardly a few months after a similar tragedy in which five people were killed on another bridge of Abbasia Canal near Kotsamaba. The district administration has failed to take safety measures on these bridges.
