Karachi Kings off to royal startArchive
DUBAI: A hat-trick by paceman Mohammad Amir followed by impressive half-centuries from Lendl Simmons and Shakib Al Hasan helped Karachi Kings outplay Lahore Qalandars by seven wickets in the PSL match here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
A 109-run third-wicket stand between Simmons and Shakib made the modest 126-run chase easy after Karachi made a disastrous start, losing two early wickets for just four runs on the board.
Simmons remained not out on 62, facing 46 balls and hitting eight fours and two sixes while Shakib made 51 off 35 balls with three fours and as many sixes.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, the Qalandars found themselves in trouble when they lost their mighty hitting opener Chris Gayle (6) in the very first over bowled by Karachi captain Shoaib Malik.
And after the departure of other opener and captain Azhar Ali (18 off 16) bowled by Shakib at the total of 37 in the fifth over, the Qalandars just could not get the momentum they required for posting a competitive total.
Amir’s hat-trick in the 19th over with the total at 117 smothered the Qalandars’ innings as the left-armer sent back Dwayne Bravo (14), Zohaib Khan (0) and Kevon Cooper (0) on successive deliveries.
With the feat, Amir became the first player to record a hat-trick in PSL.
As a result of some excellent bowling by Karachi bowlers, Lahore Qalandars were eventually restricted to 125 for eight in the allotted 20 overs as Sohail Tanvir bowled Mohammad Rizwan (37 off 31) in the last over of the innings.
Other than Rizwan, Sohaib Maqsood (22 off 27) was the only notable scorer. Sohaib was dismissed by Imad Wasim. Malik, Shakib, Sohail and Imad took a wicket apiece.
Shakib was named the player of the match for his all-round performance.
