Atletico ease past Sociedad to move closer to BarcaArchive
MADRID: Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3-0 home win over Real Sociedad on Tuesday to close the gap behind La Liga leaders Barcelona to five points.
Barca, who can restore their eight-point advantage with a victory at Rayo Vallecano on Thursday, have 66 points from 26 games, while Atletico have played a game more.
Atletico also opened a seven-point advantage over third-placed Real Madrid, who play at last-placed Levante on Wednesday, while Sociedad are ninth with 34.
“We will keep trying to do the best we can,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. “We know that it will be difficult for Barcelona to falter.”
A bright start from the hosts was rewarded when Diego Reyes turned Koke’s low cross into his own net after just eight minutes at the Vicente Calderon.
Saul Niguez’s acrobatic volley doubled Atletico’s advantage a minute into the second-half before French striker Antoine Griezmann sealed the victory by converting a 61st-minute penalty.
At the bottom of the table Las Palmas secured a huge 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Getafe to move three points clear of the relegation zone.
Willian Jose, Jonathan Viera and a Tana double consigned Getafe, who played a man down from the 65th after a red card for Uruguayan defender Alvaro Pereira, to a seventh straight defeat which leaves them just two points above the drop zone.
