Jewellery shop looted on Tariq Road

KARACHI: Nearly half a dozen gunmen stormed into a jewellery shop on Tariq Road on Monday afternoon, held inmates hostage at gunpoint and took away gold ornaments, according to the Ferozabad police.

The shop owner claimed that 24 kilos of gold had been looted but the claim the police said was yet to be verified.

Syed Jewellers was struck by five armed men at around 12:30pm, said SP Gulshan Dr Fahad Ahmed, adding that they took away the looted gold in a car.

The officer said the claim of the jeweller would be investigated before determining the value of the loot.

The Gulshan SP said it was ‘alarming’ to note that the owner had not installed at his shop an ‘electronic lock’, which was contrary to the general practice adopted by jewellery shops in the city.

Also, there was no security guard posted at the shop, he noted.

The officer said it was a busy shopping area and the shop was also adjacent to a restaurant where 50 to 60 employees worked but none of them informed the police about the situation at the shop.

The incident triggered protests by shopkeepers.
