You have to hand it to the Nescafe Basement team: Season 4 is fantastic, to say the least. Look at the range that the project is able to cover with tremendous orchestration and vocal charm. If on the one hand it has presented John Newman’s Love Me Again with infectious energy by virtue of an all-girls band (led by Anna Salman’s voice), on the other hand it’s able to redo one of the most difficult of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s qawwalis Tum aik gorakh dhanda ho without losing out on the meaningfulness of the subject of the qawwali.
Zain Ali and his fellow musicians’ rendition of the kalaam was innovative and worth listening to over and over. Good job! It’s time the media gave due recognition to this show, which is gradually but surely ushering Pakistani music into a new era.
