Police smash 22-member gang of dacoits

LAHORE: Capital City Police Officer Amin Wains claims that the police have busted a 22-member inter-provincial dacoits’ gang which had targeted a number of people including the prime minister’s secretary.

The CCPO told a press conference on Friday that the gang had committed crime in Sindh and Punjab, depriving doctors, officials of intelligence agencies, industrialists and businessmen of millions of rupees.

“They had created terror as they were known as highly professional, inhuman and brutal in their manners,” the CCPO said, adding they would target rich and sound families, government officials and professionals. He said they had formed ‘Baba Dacoit Gang’ and initial investigations suggested that they had committed over 80 incidents of crime.

“We have recovered from their possession jewellery, gold, cash, laptops, watches, and cell phones worth over Rs40 million during interrogation,” the CCPO said. The police also recovered motorbikes and the gold melting instruments besides a huge cache of weapons, he said.

“They have targeted 71 houses of high-ranking government officials and businessmen,” the CCPO said, adding that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Secretary Azhar Ashfaq, Col Muhammad Naeem, money exchange owner Atif Qamar, famous businessmen Shaukat Ali and Shahid Maqbool Cheema were among targets.

Asked about the arrest of killers of SHO Tajamul Butt, he said the investigation teams would trace them soon.

Mr Wains expressed his displeasure while sharing some facts saying criminals got bails from courts due to certain reasons and committed crime again and again.

Among those arrested were Ghulam Hussain (ringleader), Waheed, Ashraf, Ghulam Mustafa, Imran and Kamran.
