Asjad stuns Sajjad to make semis, Sohail, Babar triumphArchive
KARACHI: Internationals second seed Sohail Shehzad and fourth seed Babar Masih maintained their consistent run as Asjad Iqbal stunned Mohammad Sajjad on way to making the semi-finals in the second ranking snooker championship at hotel Movenpick Arcade on Thursday.
Punjab’s Abu Saim is the fourth player to complete the semi-final lin-up by getting the better of Sindh’s Ian Mark John by 5-4 frames in the fully stretched battle.
Saim is drawn to face Babar in the best of nine frames first semi-final at 9am while Sohail takes on Asjad in the second at 11.30am on Friday.
Sohail, who went down 5-7 to Mohammad Bilal in the final of the 41st national championship on Feb 27, fought tooth and nail to whip former national champion and 13th seed Shahid Aftab 5-4. The former Asian Games team event bronze medallist came from the jaws of defeat to turn the tables on his opponent 36-83, 18-59, 33-67, 30-66, 69-30, 63-22, 79-21, 69-26, 69-43.
Contrary to Sohail’s encounter, Babar, who recently featured in the Asian 6-Reds and team event at Abu Dhabi, coasted to straight victory over another former national champion Mohammad Asif Toba.Babar won the duel 74-43, 89-0, 71-15, 75-39, 66-23.
Seventh seed Asjad, who teamed up with Mohammad Asif in the team event at Abu Dhabi, conceded two frames while sending fifth seed Sajjad packing by 5-2 frames the scores being 10-60, 65-16, 54-48, 73-11, 28-62, 68-28, 68-33.
Saim, an old hand, was stretched to limits by Ian Mark John, who is said to be find of the event, before bowing out 4-5. The former compiled a break of exact 100 in the second frame before registering 13-93, 116-17, 1-68, 70-37, 0-63, 75-39, 80-0, 19-72, 76-33 victory.
