Matloob retains lead to clinch CNS Open after 12 years

KARACHI: Lady Luck smiled on Matloob Ahmed who fulfilled his dreams by recapturing the CNS Open crown after a lapse of 12 years at the Karachi Golf Club on Sunday.

Overnight leader Matloob had a par round on the concluding day for a 72-hole aggregate of 276, 12 under-par, to win the UMA 21st Chief of the Naval Staff Open Golf Championship by four shots on Sunday to follow his last victory here back in 2004.

Matloob, who was tied at seventh place at 72, eight strokes behind the leader after the first round, leaped places by firing successive rounds of 66 that made the difference.




Resuming his last round with three strokes advantage over Shafiq Masih, Matloob had pars on the front nine. However, he scored a bogey on yellow 10 before scoring an eagle on the 12th hole.

Nine-time former champion Shabbir had to be content with second slot four shots behind the champion with a score of eight under 280.

Shabbir’s four round scores were 72, 67, 70, 71.

Finishing third a shot behind at 281, seven under par, was Shafiq Masih, who surged on top of the leader board after second round succeeding first day leader Hamza Amin. The latter slid on the leader board and finished with par scores of 288.

Defending champion Mohammad Munir settled for a joint seventh position with Nadeem Inayat with a total score of two under 286.

M. Sharif played shot par 72 for a four-day aggregate of eight over 296 to win the amateurs’ title by four shots.

Former champion and overnight leader Mohammad Ali Hai, who made a great comeback after a long layoff, finished runner-up at 300, 12 over par.

Imdad Hussain, meanwhile, captured the seniors’ pros title carding six under 138 in the 36-holes event to win by one shot. His two rounds scores were 67, 71.

Mohammad Akram finished runner-up at 139 scoring 70 and 69 in the two rounds.

The prize distribution ceremony will be held on Monday evening.
