Cement sales rise, exports continue to suffer

KARACHI: Total cement despatches in July 2016 increased 9.82 per cent to 2.483 million tonnes compared with July 2015.

There was healthy offtake in domestic despatches despite heavy rains that affected construction activities in many parts of the country.

Local sales went up by 12pc to 2.018m tonnes as compared to 1.8m tonnes in the same month last year. While exports remained stagnant at 465,102 tonnes as against 465,369 tonnes last July.Sales in the north zone were 1.67m tonnes up from 1.52m tonnes in July 2015 while despatches in the south zone were 0.35m tonnes as compared with 0.279m tonnes in the same month last year.

Manufacturing units in the north region registered growth both in local despatches and exports at 9.85pc and 11.82pc, respectively, while the south region registered 26.15pc local growth but exports declined 17pc.

Quantitatively, the north zone contributed 306,000 tonnes and the south zone 159,000 tonnes to exports during the month. In July 2015 exports from the north were 274,000 tonnes and from the south contributed 192,000 tonnes.

Despatches to Afghanistan fell 15.87pc from last July. Exports by sea also substantially declined by 27.43pc over the same period last year.

A spokesperson of the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) said exports had continuously been falling for the last few years -- 3pc in 2013-14, 11.57pc in 2014-15 and 18pc in 2015-16.
