‘Govt to support hand-knotted carpet industry’Archive
LAHORE: The government is determined to enhance exports of hand-knotted carpets and rugs across the world as the sector can play an important role in economic growth and boost Pakistan’s soft image, Punjab Minister for Industries Chaudhry Muhammad Shafique said on Thursday.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the three-day 34th Pakistan Hand-knotted Carpet Exhibition 2016 — jointly organised by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and the Pakistan Carpets Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
Carpet exhibitions can help put the economy on track because fairs are a key to showcase Pakistani products in the world market, he said.
Pakistan has to make an extra effort in promoting exports by arranging trade fairs and exhibitions, he added.
Exhibition’s chief organiser Major Akhtar Nazir Cooki urged the government to organise such events regularly to help accelerating trade and investment and give boost to the declining tourism sector.
PCMEA Chairman Usman Ghani observed the country’s carpet exports to Europe and China have declined by more than 50 per cent.
However, the loss could be compensated by increasing volume of exports to China, where the handmade product has been in great demand, he added.
Some 62 national manufacturers have displayed their products while delegates from China, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iran, Italy and Turkey are attending the exhibition that will continue till Oct 8.
