Empress Bridge assumes ‘illuminated eminence’Archive
BAHAWALPUR: At an impressive inaugural ceremony held amid foggy and chilly Saturday night, the historical old Empress Bridge on Lahore-Karachi dual railway track was illuminated with multicoloured lights to coincide with the Happy New Year festivity.
The bridge built over the now dried-up Sutlej is almost a century old. Bedecked with multicoloured bulbs and LED lights, the bridge would present an attractive scene to railway passengers during night.
The illumination is part of the city’s beautification plan evolved by the local administration, which has restored seven entrance gates, and a dysfunctional clock at Government Sadiq Dane (SD) High School.
The event was addressed by State Education Minister Baleeghur Rehman, Punjab Minister Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channar, Commissioner Saqib Zafar and others.
The illumination project was executed by engineer Waqas Abdullah in the shortest possible time.
He briefed the participants about the electronic system, switching lights on automatically at dusk and off at dawn.
