Dutch guest player records upset wins before flying out

ISLAMABAD: Rik Van Grewen, a guest player from the Netherlands, registered back-to-back upset victories to qualify for the men’s singles semi-finals of the Subh-e-Nau National Hard Court Tennis Championships here at the PSB Sports Complex on Monday.

However, after Monday’s victories he left Pakistan, leaving an open chance for his rival to get a walkover in what could be a thrilling semi-final clash.

The Dutch player was in Pakistan to attend a wedding and during his stay he played the qualifying round of the event to reach the main round.

First in his pre-quarterfinal on Monday, Rik outplayed Pakistan’s No.7 Mohammad Mudassir 6-2, 6-4.

Since Rik had to travel back home, he played his quarter-final the same day, against Pakistan No.4 Heera Ashiq. Though Heera bagged the opening set, he could not maintain his show and surrendered the next two sets to lose the match 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
