Inundated roads expose drainage flawsArchive
GUJRAT: Heavy rain wreaked havoc here on Wednesday aggravating problems with the city’s drainage system that faced a similar situation earlier on Monday.
The heavy downpour started late on Tuesday night and continued on Wednesday with regular intervals which resulted in accumulation of rainwater. The sanitation branch of the Municipal Corporation (MC) also failed to make arrangements to cope with the situation which had become common for the citizens. Neither the sewerage system nor storm water drains could be made functional so far.
Before every monsoon, civic bodies would launch a desilting campaign to clean storm water drains and sewerage lines however this time they failed to do so due to which roads were inundated.
Localities such as Circular Road, Prince Chowk, Jinnah Road, Rehman Shaheed Road, Ali Pura Road, Bhimbher Road, Jail Road, Court Road and Railway Road were the worst hit where rainwater was accumulated and could not be drained all day.
Rainwater also inundated the MC compound, the district complex compound where offices of the deputy commissioner, district police officer as well as courts and offices of lawyers were situated.
Routine life was also paralysed, particularly shopping and businesses related to Eid, as even 12 hours after the rain, the city’s commercial hub of Muslim Bazaar and dozens of its adjoining markets remained submerged in rainwater.
Mayor Haji Nasir Mehmood along with officials of the sanitation branch inspected various areas of the city.
