Rumman’s nine bowls UBL to second straight innings winArchive
KARACHI: Pakistan’s limited-overs seamer Rumman Raees Khan grabbed career-best figures of nine for 25 as United Bank Limited trounced Lahore Whites to celebrate their second innings win in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship on Friday.
Lahore Whites, who began day four of the second-round Group ‘B’ fixture at the LCCA Ground in Lahore at 43-6, were shot out for 88 to hand UBL an innings and 122-run victory.
Tailender Umaid Asif showed he has the potential to become a decent lower-order batsman. Following his 97 in the second innings against Pakistan Television last week, Umaid bludgeoned nine boundaries in a top-score of 43 in 51 minutes as Lahore Whites were all out in 25.3 overs when left-armer Rumman cleaned up the right-hander.
UBL, in the process, regained their top spot with maximum 20 points, one ahead of Habib Bank Limited, who had whipped Rawalpindi by innings in less than two days of play on Wednesday.
Discarded Pakistan duo of Mohammad Irfan and Zulfiqar Babar shared seven second-innings wickets between them as defending champions deflated Faisalabad by 189 runs to gain six points in the Group ‘A’ encounter at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
Resuming at 83-5, the regional side were sent packing for 122 with the giant left-arm speedster Irfan returning figures of 4-29 in 10 overs, while slow left-armer finished with match haul of 10-71 from 42.2 overs as he followed his rich bag of 7-41 in the first innings with 3-30 on Friday.
Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) cruised to a six-wicket win against Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) in remaining Group ‘B’ tie at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot.
Chasing 166, KRL needed just 94 with nine wickets standing at start of play on the last day. In the end, they lost another three wickets before completing the task on hand.
Islamabad, widely expected, settled for three points after their Group ‘A’ game with Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) petered out in a draw at the Diamond Club Ground in the federal capital.
But the game still had some late drama as SNGPL slumped to 50-4 after being set an impossible target of 339. But discarded Pakistan wicket-keeper/batsman Mohammad Rizwan batted his team to safety by hitting up an undefeated 109 out of a second-innings total of 180-0. The diminutive right-hander decorated his 156-ball effort with 15 fours and one six.
Earlier building on their lead of 42 on the first innings, the hosts extended their second-innings tally of 208-4 before declaring at 296-9. Faizan Riaz stood out with another superlative contribution as the right-hander converted his overnight score of 62 into an unconquered 114 (off 197 balls, 10 boundaries).
Faizan was also the major run-getter on Tuesday’s first day with 79.
The third round of matches is set to commence from Monday after a gap of two days between fixtures.
