Gas supply to RYK cut after main line ruptured

RAHIM YAR KHAN: The supply of natural gas to the entire city remained suspended for more than 17 hours as the main pipeline near the Government Technical Training Institute on Mian Salah Muhammad Road got ruptured during laying of a sewer line on Sunday morning.

Public Health Engineering Department EXEN Muhammad Akhter Abbasi told Dawn that the staff was present during digging of road after permission of SNGPL in-charge Jam Mushtaq.

He said the SNGPL officials told the PHED staff [before digging] that there was only single line of two inch diameter lying four feet underground.

He said during digging the excavator damaged the six inch diameter main gas pipeline lying eight feet below the ground.

He alleged that the SNGPL officials also were not aware of the main pipeline.

He claimed that the control valve of the SNGPL near the training institute was dysfunctional due to which [SNGPL] authorities closed the main valve near Thali Chowk, suspending supply to the entire city.

He said the SNGPL officials were replacing valve.

SNGPL Deputy Engineer Jam Mushtaq did not attend calls; however, a complaint department official Asif Ali told this correspondent that the Municipal Corporation excavator damaged the main pipeline.

The gas supply to the city could not be restored till the filing of the report at 7:15pm.
