President travels on metro bus

RAWALPINDI: President Mamnoon Hussain on Thursday traveled on Metro Bus with general passengers from Pakistan Secretariat to Faiz Ahmed Faiz Bus Station, H-9 and went back to Pakistan Secretariat.

Metro Bus Project (MBP) Project Director and Commissioner Zahid Saeed gave detailed briefing about the metro bus service and the facilities provided to the people.

President Mamnoon Hussain appreciated the Metro Bus Service and said that the government should provide better facilities to the common man and it was the best example in this regard.

Commissioner Zahid Saeed told Dawn that the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) reviewed the progress on pending work on the project. “The Moti Mehal bridge over Leh Nullah, underpass and Control and Command Centre will be completed by August 14,” he said.

The contractors of the project have assured the government to complete the work on pending sections by July 31. However, again, they missed the deadline.

“The deadline is extended because the machinery being used to construct pillars of the bridge slipped during rains two weeks ago,” said Commissioner Zahid Saeed.

He said that due to the Eid holidays, the labour would not be available in coming days and the work would likely to complete by August 14. He said the contractor had been asked to increase the pace of work.

About traveling passenger ratio, he said that 90,000 passengers daily traveled through metro bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

He expressed the hope that the passengers load would increase during Eid holidays.

He said special arrangements had been made for the security of the metro bus service in Eid days. “The local police will look after the affairs of the security till the arrival of new security company,” he said.
