Sharif visits Aziz Bhatti memorial in BurkiPakistan
BEDIAN: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited here on Sunday the memorial of Maj Aziz Bhatti who had sacrificed his life while defending an outpost on the strategic BRB Canal.
Maj Bhatti was honoured with Nishan-i-Haider, the country’s highest military award, for the gallantry he showed till his martyrdom in the 1965 War against India.
A solemn ceremony was held to pay homage to the martyrs of the war at the memorial alongside the canal at Burki.
The ceremony was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Lahore Corps Commander Lt Gen Naveed Zaman, Rangers Director General Maj Gen Umar Farooq Burki, General Officer Commanding of 10 Division Maj Gen Tariq Amaan, former governor of Punjab Khalid Maqbool, war veterans, soldiers and local notables.
The prime minister offered Fateha at the memorial and laid a wreath.
The national anthem was played and a minute-long silence observed in memory of the martyrs before a guard of honour was presented by Pakistan Army troops.
The prime minister also met members of Maj Bhatti’s family and local people.
