LAHORE: The Customs staff on Wednesday took a passenger into custody at Allama Iqbal International Airport and seized 60 gold bars weighing 600 tolas worth Rs30 million from him.
An official told Dawn that the suspect identified as Muhammad Rizwan of Kot Khwaja Saeed was coming to Lahore from Dubai through Emirates Flight EK-622.
He said Lahore Collector Customs Mukarram Jah had earlier received information that a passenger on board an international flight might smuggle gold bars into Pakistan.
The official said a team led by Deputy Collector Sumair Mustansar Tarar checked all passengers and took the suspect who had concealed 60 gold bars weighing 7.5kg in belts tied with his legs into custody.
He said the government policy restricted any person to bringing gold bars in the country, adding women were allowed to carry gold jewellery for marriage or gift purposes.
The official said a case had been registered against the suspect who was under investigation.
