Congress divided over poll strategy for West Bengal: Sources

Kolkata: Congress is divided on whether to ally with Left parties for the upcoming West Bengal elections, sources said Wednesday a few days ahead of Rahul Gandhi's meeting with party leaders from the state.

Sources told CNN-IBN that the party's central leadership felt they should not burn bridges with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) by aligning with the Left.

Congress leaders felt that the party needed the backing of both TMC and Nitish Kumar's JDU in Parliament to take on the Narendra Modi government.

Others leaders however felt that considering the bad experience with the TMC in previous years, they should go with the Left this time

The party's big dilemma an alliance in Kolkata will embarrass its cadre in Kerala where the main opponent is the Left Democratic Front.

A final decision will be taken after party vice president Rahul Gandhi's meeting with leaders in West Bengal.
