PM must clear stand on intolerance, Aamir Khan misrepresented India with his statement: Ram Gopal Varma
Ram Gopal Varma has said that statements on intolerance by actors like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan give wrong impression of the country.

Amid the war of words between the government and the opposition over actor Aamir Khan's statement, some from the film fraternity have also joined the debate on intolerance. While actor Anupam Kher publicly hit out at Khan for raising the issue, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma felt that the 'PK' actor misrepresented India with his remark.

Ram Gopal Varma has said that statements on intolerance by actors like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan give wrong impression of the country. He, however, added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must break his silence over the issue.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Varma said, "Prime Minister is the head of the country, he must make his stand clear," adding that the only way the issue can be resolved is if the Prime Minister makes a statement.

Though Varma asserted that "India is more tolerant than any country in the world", he added that the negative reaction to the issue was also "very exaggerated".

"World is getting increasingly divided on religious lines...not taking any position, my comments are just my opinion," he further said.

This comes even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress-led Opposition are indulged in a war of words over the issue.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has said that instead of branding those who oppose the Prime Minister as unpatriotic, the government must reach out to people to understand the issue. Reacting to this, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said that with the Congress leader backing the actor, it seems some conspiracy is at play.
