Woman's iPhone 13 Stolen During Pilgrimage Trip to Varanasi, Awaits Action By UP Police
Woman shares post after her iPhone 13 gets pickpocketed in Varanasi, posts CCTV footage and FIR, awaits UP Police action.

A woman recently shared a distressing incident from her pilgrimage trip to Varanasi on social media. Taking to ‘X’, user @shehjarr_ detailed in a thread how her newly-bought iPhone 13 got pickpocketed in the city while she was enjoying snacks with her parents. Describing the sequence of events from obtaining the CCTV footage of the theft to filing an FIR report, Sarah expressed her disappointment with the UP Police, claiming that they weren’t taking any action.

“It happened on 29 Jan 2024 at around 1:27pm. I had visited Varanasi for a pilgrimage trip with my parents. We were having street food when some guy (black nike sweatshirt) pulled it out of my pocket. I realized it was missing 3 mints later & all of us were in a state of panic,” Sarah recalled, narrating the scene near Nai Sarak Chowk, close to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat, as captured in the CCTV footage she shared.

Additionally, she posted a photo of the FIR report filed at the nearby police station. Expressing her frustration, she revealed, “We were told to write ‘phone gum gaya hai’ instead of ‘chori hogya hai’ so that it’s not a case police has to work on.”

“After realizing there is a CCTV, we contacted the shopkeeper and asked him to help us see it. Thankfully we got the proof of it. We shared it with police and they IDENTIFIED him as ‘Vijay’-someone who’s a known thief in area and has gone to the jail multiple times,” she added.

Sarah lamented the lack of updates from the police regarding her phone’s recovery. The iPhone’s location was traced to somewhere in Jharkhand. “A pilgrimage trip to Varanasi & Kashi Vishwanath temple turned into a traumatic criminal experience for me and my family. Such people near the temple arena demean the sanctity of the place and make it unsafe for tourists who want to visit for spiritual purposes,” she noted.

While Sarah acknowledged that she does not expect to find her phone, she highlighted the emotional and financial toll this incident has taken on her and her family, stating that recovery will take days.
