A 77-year-old man killed his 61-year-old paralytic wife at their house before jumping to death from the roof of the four-storey building on Monday night in Kolkata. The incident took place at the Nonadanga Balmiki Ambedkar Abasan under Anandpur police station at 9:15 pm.

While the man, Amulya Samaddar, was a roof construction contractor by profession, his wife, Gita Samadda had been bedridden for the last 10 years after suffering a stroke. According to a TOI report, her husband was her only attendant and caretaker.

Amulya left behind a suicide note stating that no one was to be blamed for his death and that he had murdered his wife. The note was recovered from his pocket.

According to police, the couple’s two daughters, one settled at Thakurpukur and another at Bansdroni, had come to visit them on Sunday. The eldest daughter had stepped out for some work when the incident took place on Monday.

Police stated that Amulya had been a heart patient for several years. He had consulted a heart specialist a few days ago, who had advised him to undergo several tests and asked him to get admitted at the earliest as he had several blocks in his heart.

“Amulya, prima facie, was worried over who would look after his wife if he died before her. He was worried about the finances. However, we will speak to his daughters, relatives and neighbours before arriving at any conclusion,” DC (East) Arish Bilal was quoted by TOI as saying.

Neighbours of the couple told TOI that Anulya was an extremely caring husband and that he had been upset ever since his visit to the doctor.
