Hyundai, Kia Team Up With Samsung To Develop Connected Car Technology
Hyundai and Kia will be able to seamlessly connect customers' cars and homes using Samsung's Internet of Things platform.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have partnered with smartphone manufacturer Samsung Electronics to develop connected car technology that will provide both Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services.

The agreement, which was finalised on January 3, aims to improve future connectivity between homes and their vehicles through the use of the Korean tech giant’s Internet of Things platform, also known as SmartThings.

Customers of Hyundai Motor and Kia will benefit from the ability to control digital devices remotely via voice and touch commands through the infotainment systems integrated into their cars all thanks to connected car technology. They will also be able to monitor various car functions remotely with the aid of this technology by using artificial intelligence (AI) speakers, televisions, and smartphone applications.

By activating ‘Home Mode’ from their vehicle, Hyundai Motor and Kia customers will be able to pair their homes with their vehicles. This will activate the registered air conditioner and air purifier at home, as well as the robot vacuum cleaner and lights, creating a comfortable and pleasant living environment.

When leaving the house, customers can select the ‘Away Mode’ to turn off unnecessary lights, activate the robot vacuum cleaner to keep the space clean while he/she is gone, and precondition the vehicle’s air conditioning to a comfortable temperature. In addition, owners of electric vehicles (EV) made by Hyundai Motor and Kia can monitor and modify the best times to charge their vehicles by utilising SmartThings’ integrated home energy management service.

In order to do this, Hyundai Motor and Kia will create reliable infotainment systems that can provide services. These systems will then be updated over-the-air (OTA) and via USB, even for cars that are already in service.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields. We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center as per a press release.
