Somnath Chatterjee irons out creases with unruly MPs
Chatterjee could not tolerate unruly behaviour by MPs on Thursday.

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee tried to mollify Members of the Parliament only a day after he had shouted at them by saying aloud that he wished none of them won the next election.

He had tried hard to tolerate unruly behaviour all through Thursday and Friday but then had come the outburst.

"You are insulting the people of the country and wasting public money. You do not deserve even a single paisa. You are behaving in a condemnable manner," Chatterjee had said on Thursday as chaos prevailed in the Lok Sabha.

"You don't deserve any allowances," the Speaker had added. "I think this house should be adjourned sine die. This is the only way to save public money,” Chatterjee had said.

But on Friday, the Speaker almost apologized for his outburst at the unruly behaviour of the representatives people had sent to the Parliament.

“Yesterday I made some comments out of a little frustration. I want all of you to come back if people support you. I am not contesting,” said Chatterjee.

Somnath Chatterjee had been elected Lok Sabha Speaker for the ninth time. He will preside over the 14th Lok Sabha for the last time on Wednesday and he doesn't want to go away in an angry mood.

He has been called the headmaster by some and a talkative old man by others. Chatterjee's role in the House and his numerous interventions have often caused controversies.

The Opposition has never really been fond of him. One presiding officer of the Parliament felt he was non partisan.

If the referee scores a goal, then what happens,” one asked rather rhetorically.

Lalu Prasad however was quick to play the defender.

“He is like a guardian,” said the Railway Minister of the Speaker.

The MPs may feel upset with him but Chatterjee's popularity ratings have soared after he was expelled by his party, the CPI(M) after the nuke-deal divide.

That considerably improved his neutral stature and now both government and treasury benches agree that he has been a fair Speaker.
