Coimbatore: Western Bypass Project Speeds Up, Phase One To Wrap Up By August 2025
The Department is swiftly acquiring land for the second phase, covering approximately 10 km from Madhampatti to Kanuvai.

Coimbatore’s State Highways Department is gearing up to wrap up phase one of the western bypass project by August next year.

The 32 km road project, divided into three phases, is making significant progress.

The initial phase focuses on developing an 11.8 km four-lane road from Madukkarai to Madhampatti, costing Rs 200 crores. Despite slowdowns due to sand availability issues, the Department has resolved them and aims to expedite the remaining work.

Land acquisition for the second phase, spanning nearly 10 km from Madhampatti to Kanuvai, is 70 percent complete. To secure government funds, the Department aims to finalize 90 percent of land acquisition within a month.

The official also mentioned to The Hindu about the commencement of measures for land acquisition for the final phase.

Commenting on project delays, K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, emphasized the need for detailed government scrutiny to avoid delays exceeding a year.

He highlighted the tendency for project scopes to change over time, potentially leading to cancellations or drops. Kathirmathiyon urged the government to set deadlines for land acquisition, especially in Coimbatore, where delays are common, provided there are no legal hurdles.
