TVS Motors caught everyone’s attention at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo when they showcased their TVS Akula 310 Concept, which came shortly after the announcement that the Indian automaker had teamed up with BMW. Set to be the fastest TVS motorcycle in the market, the Akula 310 could launch by June or July 2017.
The bike is expected to be powered by the same engine that is used in the BMW G310R – which is also going to launch this year – and the design of the concept hinted at a performance-focused machine.
Speaking of the design, the bike takes inspiration from a Shark and hence the name ‘Akula’ which is Russian for Shark.
The Akula could be powered by a 313cc single-cylinder engine with liquid cooling, developed by BMW Motorrad, but tuned for power delivery at higher RPMs. It is expected to produce 34 horsepower and 28 Nm of torque and will come mated to a six-speed transmission.
In terms of styling, the Akula could come with twin headlamps, a low-nose-high-tail design, disc brakes at front and back, a digital instrument cluster, upside-down forks at the front and clip-on handlebars. We also expect the bike to come with dual channel ABS system, just like its sibling – the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V.
There has much speculation about the kind of mileage the motorcycle would give, but it is too soon to talk about it because the bike is still undergoing the final stages of road-testing.
The Akula 310 will be the company’s way to pay tribute to over three decades of TVS’ racing history and hence, the motorcycle has high expectations to live up to. What could be a deciding factor is how the company prices the Akula 310 at. Especially, since the competition like Bajaj with the Dominar 400 and KTM with the updated RC series are offering great value for money motorcycles.
