Animal has had its share of controversies as many have perceived the movie to reek of misogyny and blatant patriarchy.

Ranbir Kapoor’s compelling performance in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has earned him the Filmfare award for Best Actor. While the movie, just falling short of the Rs 1000 crore mark, critics believe that the simultaneous releases of Salaar and Dunki in the same month might have affected its collections. Despite some hurdles, Animal is hailed as a blockbuster success.

The film, however, hasn’t been without its share of controversies. Many have criticised it for perceived misogyny, blatant patriarchy and an excess of brutal violence. Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director, faced scrutiny for objectionable scenes depicting misogyny, reminiscent of his previous films Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake, Kabir Singh.

At its core, Animal tells an emotional story about an unconventional bond between a father and son, portrayed by Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. The protagonist’s love for his father and his willingness to go to any extent to protect or earn his respect form the crux of the narrative. Despite seeing his father as a superhero, the huge business magnate seldom finds time for his son, leading to neglect or reprimands.

Interestingly, to emphasise Ranbir Kapoor’s character’s obsession with his father, the director strategically incorporated the word ‘Papa’ into numerous scenes throughout the film. As the movie premiered on Netflix on January 26, viewers began noticing the repetition of the word ‘Papa’ and turned it into a humorous observation. According to users, the word is uttered a staggering 196 times in the film. It isn’t the first time a Ranbir Kapoor film has faced such jests; his previous movie Brahmastra was also ridiculed for the frequent utterance of the name ‘Shiva’ by Alia Bhatt.

While Animal continues to be celebrated for its commercial success and Ranbir Kapoor’s impactful performance, the controversies surrounding its thematic elements have sparked debates within the film community and among the audience.
