Experienced Indian cricketer, Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for the up-and-coming Indian pacer, Mukesh Kumar who has started to get his international career going having been part of the squad in all formats. Despite not being part of the World Cup squad, Ashwin believes that he could have a similar path to that of Mohammed Shami.

The spinner shared Mukesh Kumar’s story from a talent hunt conducted by the Bengal Cricket Association where Sourav Ganguly was the president at the time. The Indian legend had contracted other legendary cricketers like Waqar Younis, Muttiah Muralitharan and VVS Laxman to head the talent hunt for Bengal Cricket.

Ashwin shared, “Mukesh Kumar had also attended this talent hunt. He hails from a small village in Gopalganj, Bihar and had travelled to West Bengal in search of work as the ground staff or one of the academy support staff and took part in the talent hunt once he learned about it.”

According to Ashwin, the talent hunt took place at Jadhavpur University and Mukesh Kumar took part and received a bib to confirm his participation.

“Imagine you are at a huge talent show in search of a job and you are going to showcase your talent to someone like Waqar Younis, but at that point in time, you have gone to the toilet! Unimaginable right?,  Ashwin asked as he laughed.

Mukesh had returned and was mentioned to him that his name was not registered as he missed out on his chance. It was explained to him that his name had been called out but since nobody came his name was crossed out.

Ashwin however added that, “They decided to give him the chance and made him bowl two balls by the time they were leaving. Those two balls are the ones that made him bowl for India right now”

Mukesh Kumar then went on to play Ranji Trophy cricket and went further as he made his debut for India in all formats as well as being part of the Indian Premier League. He will likely be part of the Indian side that takes on Australia in the second T20I taking place at Thiruvananthapuram as well later today.
