'If I Say It, It's Speculation': Harbhajan Singh Weighs in on Rumours of Gautam Gambhir Touted as Next India Head Coach
Primarily, it was learned that Rahul Dravid doesn’t want to reapply for the head post. And one name that has got all fans excited has been that of former India opener and 2-time World Cup winner, Gautam Gambhir.

Harbhajan Singh doesn’t know whether Gautam Gambhir, who is being spoken of as the favorite to take over India’s head coach position from the outgoing Rahul Dravid, will get the job but he does believe it would be a crown of thorns for whoever chooses to wear it.

Jay Shah’s announcement of the BCCI inviting fresh applications for the post of head coach, earlier this year, opened the floodgates for speculation to arise regarding who may take up the mantle next.

“The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates,” the statement read.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the BCCI had reportedly approached Gambhir to take over the coaching responsibilities from Dravid. The report further stated that the board has already contacted the former India batter who is currently associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

2011 World Cup-winner Harbhajan Singh also shared his two cents on the same, stating that whoever takes up the mantle next will need to be up for the challenge of their careers so far.

“If I say it properly, it is a speculation, which is doing rounds…the biggest thing a coach can do is to bring everyone together, so that team plays together. So, whether Gautam becomes coach or Ashish Nehra, or whosoever gets the opportunity, hope they do better than what others before them did.”

The legendary off-spinner also ruled himself out of the race, stating his desire to focus on his family currently.

“I don’t think I will be able to give that much time. At this stage of my life I have a young family and I need to be around them and look after them. Yes, when the right time comes, I will put my foot forward and say I am ready for it,” he concluded.
