England managed to put up a second innings total of 420 runs thanks to a brilliant Ollie Pope innings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Pope’s incredible 196-run knock carried England past the Indian first-innings lead of 190 runs as the visitors finished their second innings with a lead of 230 runs.
England finished Day 3 with 316 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets with a lead of 126 runs over the hosts as Pope remained unbeaten at 148. Pope began the penultimate day of the opening Test of the five-match series alongside Ahmed Rehan, who supported his 26-year-old teammate with a 28-run knock before Jasprit Bumrah sent him back to the hut.
Debutant Tom Hartley came out to bat as he put up an 80-run stand with Pope before veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin castled the English spinner after he had made 34 runs.
It did not take long for the ninth English to fall as Mark Wood was given the marching orders for a duck as KS Bharat picked up the catching opportunity offered up to him behind the wickets by the English pacer without any fuss as Ravindra Jadeja got in on the day’s action.
Pope, who was four runs shy of a well-deserved double ton, failed to reach the landmark score as he was castled by Bumrah at 196 runs.
Indian pacer Bumrah finished the second innings as the side’s highest wicket-taker with 4 dismissals to his name. Ashwin added three wickets to his tally while Jadeja dismissed a couple of English batters in the second innings.
England won the toss and opted to bat first in the game as they were bundled out for 236 runs in the first innings of the game as Stokes top-scored for the tourists with 70 runs off his bat.
Ashwin and Jadeja were the tormenters in chief on the opening day of the series as they both scalped 3 wickets each, while Bumrah and Patel dismissed two batsmen each.
India replied with 436 runs to establish a 190-run lead thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 80-run opening knock, KL Rahul’s patient 86 and Jadeja’s 87-run innings. Root was the unlikely pick of the bowlers for England as he managed to pick four wickets to wrap up the Indian first innings.
India now need 231 runs to win the opening Test of the five-match series at home.
