Nicholas Pooran Breaks Chris Gayle's Record, Becomes Leading Run-getter for West Indies in T20I History
Nicholas Pooran has become the leading run-getter in T20Is for West Indies, surpassing Chris Gayle.

West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has etched his name in the history during his innings against New Zealand at the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday.

Pooran has become the all-time leading run-scorer for West Indies in T20Is. He surpassed the legendary Chris Gayle to set a new benchmark.

Gayle, who represented the West Indies in 79 T20Is, aggregated 1899 runs with an average of 27.92 and a strike-rate of 137.5.

Ahead of the contest, Pooran needed three runs to overtake Gayle which he duly did.

Pooran hit three fours during his 12-ball knock to score 17 runs which took his tally of T20I runs to 1914. He is the only batter from the West Indies to breach the 1900-run mark in the format.

Since making his debut against Pakistan in September 2016, he has played 91 T20Is and boasts of a strike rate of 134.03 and an average of 25.52.

Former batter Marlon Samuels is third on the list of most T20I runs for the West Indies. He represented West Indies in 67 matches in the shortest format and recorded 1611 runs. Legendary allrounder Kieron Pollard follows Samuels, having registered 1569 runs in 101 T20Is.

As far as the ongoing T20 World Cup is concerned, the West Indies have qualified for the Super Eight round. The co-hosts have been the dominant side in Group C.

They defeated Papua New Guinea to open their campaign before beating Uganda in a one-sided clash.

West Indies continued the momentum against New Zealand. Batting first, they recovered to post 149/9.

The Kiwi batting unit surrendered early in front of Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie, who picked four and three wickets respectively. Thanks to an exceptional bowling show, the West Indies restricted New Zealand to 136 runs, confirming their place in the Super Eight.
