One of the finest players ever to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kieron Pollard guided Mumbai Indians to innumerable victories in the history of the competition. Pollard played one of the finest knocks in a Mumbai Indians jersey on this day, back in 2013. His all-round efforts in the final helped Mumbai Indians in winning their first-ever IPL trophy in 2013.
Playing against Chennai Super Kings in the summit clash, Mumbai Indians won the title on May 26, 2013. It was Pollard who came up with a superb knock of 60 (not out) off 32 balls in that game against the MS Dhoni-led side.
Prior to the IPL 2013, Mumbai Indians had reached the final once (in 2010) but failed to clinch the silverware.
Winning the toss, the then Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma decided to bat first. The decision backfired as Mumbai Indians lost three early wickets posting just 16 runs on the board.
Chennai Super Kings’ Albie Morkel appeared to be in red-hot form as he picked up two quick wickets to earn an advantage for his side.
Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik played a vital knock in a bid to save his side but his stint did not turn out to be long-lasting. Karthik departed scoring 21 off 26 balls. Ambati Rayudu also looked in fine touch as he scored 37 runs off 36 deliveries. The duo stitched a solid partnership of 36 runs.
But it was Kieron Pollard who ultimately emerged as Mumbai Indians’ saviour. Mumbai Indians were reeling at 4/52 in 9.3 overs when Pollard came down to bat. The West Indies all-rounder displayed sensational batting to guide his side to a defendable total of 148 despite Mumbai Indians conceding wickets at the other end.
Kieron Pollard’s epic knock comprised seven boundaries and three sixes. Pollard remained unbeaten on 60 off 32 balls. Pollard and Ambati Rayudu forged a crucial partnership of 48 runs. Pollard hit two back-to-back sixes on the last two deliveries of the innings to guide Mumbai Indians to a total of 148.
Chennai Super Kings did not have a fruitful start to their run chase as they lost their opening batter Michael Hussey for one in the very first over. It was Lasith Malinga who claimed the first wicket for Mumbai Indians. Malinga claimed another wicket on the next delivery sending Suresh Raina back to the dressing room for a duck.
The then Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni came up with a valiant knock of 63 (not out) off 45 balls but his efforts, eventually, proved to be futile. Chennai Super Kings fell short of the target by 23 runs. Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson and Harbhajan Singh claimed two wickets each for Mumbai Indians.
Kieron Pollard also contributed significantly claiming one wicket for the Mumbai-based franchise. Pollard scripted impressive figures of 1/34 in his four overs in the IPL 2013 final against Chennai Super Kings.
