With the New York leg of the T20 World Cup 2024 coming to an end, India will now turn their focus towards the Super Eight stage for which they qualified after beating USA on Wednesday with a game to spare.
The first round matches were co-hosted by USA and in the Caribbean islands. However, the Super Eight matches will be entirely held in the Caribbean where pitches are expected to be more conducive to spin bowling.

India played their first three matches of the competition in New York where the tricky pitch made life difficult for the batters. From invariable bounce to being two-paced, the surfaces presented quite a challenge with fast bowlers coming into play.
India defeated Ireland, Pakistan and USA to advance to the next round and will next face Canada in Florida to conclude their Group A fixtures.
Legspinner Piyush Chawla says India’s performances on ‘dicey pitch’ of New York has raised hopes.
“The pitch in New York was very dicey and the way India performed on that pitch and won three out of three games, so there are very good chances going forward,” Chawla told media on the sidelines of IISM Convocation Ceremony in Mumbai on Thursday.
“The spinners were not needed as much in New York but once you enter the second leg for the Super Eight, the spinners have had a big role in the West Indies. Our spinners will come into play now,” he added.
India have two specialist spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the squads besides allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
Chawla feels that Kuldeep will be the preferred specialist spinner.
“To be very honest only one will play, and I think Kuldeep will be the first preference because of what he has done in the last one and a half years. You have Axar and Jadeja who can give you the batting depth so I feel Kuldeep will get the nod,” he said.
Chawla lauded India for putting up impressive shows in New York, especially against Pakistan when they successfully defended 120.
“It was tricky, no doubt, but good teams have done well. Like India defended 120 runs against Pakistan. When they had made just 119 I do not think many people would have given them the chance but the way the Indian bowling unit bowled, especially Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik, that was really a treat to watch,” he said.
