‘People Will Remember his Captaincy for Ages’: Ex-IND All-Rounder’s Subtle Response to Virat vs Rohit Captaincy Debate
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan described the basic difference in leadership qualities between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

India’s loss to England in the first Test in Hyderabad has also put Rohit Sharma’s leadership under the scanner. Though India have not lost a series since he took over captaincy from Virat Kohli, the fans have been drawing comparisons between their style of leading the team.

The debate has gotten intense after England bounced back in their second essay in Hyderabad to outsmart the hosts on a turning wicket. Number 3 batter Ollie Pope blunted India’s spin attack with a colossal knock of 196 runs and then debutant Tom Hartley, who had a terrible first innings, recorded a 7-wicket haul to bundle out India for 202 in the chase of 231.

The experts, especially the English cricket fraternity believe that Kohli’s presence would’ve added value to India’s batting which crumbled against England’s bravery. While a few, including the legendary Geoffrey Boycott, believe that Rohit is past his prime and that India need a complete changeover.

Meanwhile, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan had his say on the Kohli vs Rohit leadership debate. Speaking on the sidelines of the Asian Legends League launch event, Pathan described the basic difference in leadership qualities between Rohit and Kohli.

“The way Virat led the side and the changes he induced into the team was commendable. People will remember his captaincy for ages. He carried the aggression throughout the five days of a Test match,” Pathan said.

“On the other hand, Rohit’s way to leading the is completely different. He is more tactical and remains involved in the game. He doesn’t show his aggression as much as Virat,” he added.

Before signing off, Pathan wished that India would bounce back in the 5-match series and defeat Ben Stokes’ England.

“So, the scenario was different when Virat was the leader. So are now when Rohit Sharma has the control in his hands. But I wish that this Indian team shall come back stronger, which it’ll definitely do,” he concluded.
